1. 1408
You know...the one by Stephen King about a haunted hotel. No, I'm not talking about The Shining. 1408 is based on a short story by Stephen King. The main premise is there is a man who writes novels about the most haunted places he visits, but he does not believe in the supernatural. When he finally stays in a hotel room that is a bit, well, off, he struggles to maintain his sanity. I really like this movie because of the story line and also the way it creates fear. If you like to be scared but do not like gore, this one is for you.

2. The Skeleton Key
This came on randomly when I was on the ScFi channel and I have watched it multiple times since. The Skeleton Key takes place in New Orleans. When a young nurse cares for a patient in an old house, she realizes something is wrong with the place. Her search for answers has her learning about voodoo, ghosts, and magic. This movie has a good storyline and is another great horror movie to watch that is not gory.

3. As Above, So Below
After watching the first few minutes and learning this was a found footage movie, I did have my doubts, but in the end this became one of my favorite movies. A group of researchers are led into the catacombs below Paris in their search for the stone of Nicholas Flemel. As they head deeper into the catacombs things get stranger and more disturbing and once they realize they are in danger, it is too late to escape. This movie is a claustrophobic adventure; don't watch if you're afraid of small places ;)

4. The Conjuring
Probably no surprise here, this movie was a popular hit not too long ago. We follow a family who, you guessed it, moved into an abandoned house that incidentally was haunted by harmful spirits. It is difficult to find horror movies that aren't too predictable, and this one is truly scary.

5. The Grudge
I probably don't need to explain this one, but if you haven't watched it by chance and you enjoy scary movies, this is a must have for your horror itinerary. Taking place in Japan, this story revolves around  the ghosts of a family, particularly that of a young boy, who haunt the new inhabitants of their home. The creatures in this film are definitely nightmare fuel.

6. Pet Semetary
This one is probably less of a horror movie and if you are more sensitive this one might not be for you. Based on Stephen King's Pet Sematary, a family moves into a new house near the forest, which happens to be near a pet cemetery started by children who lost pets. I can't say much more without giving away important plot details, but if you are looking for something stomach churning and generally disturbing, you've come to the right place. Careful though, it does pull more than a few heartstrings.

7. The Babadook
I came across this unique horror film on Netflix and was surprised by how genuinely terrifying it is. A young boy of a struggling family begins to have behavior problems after reading a strange story called The Babadook. Little did they know that the Babadook was a real monster. Definitely creepy and shocking

8. The Exorcist
I tried to stay away from classics for this list, but I caved and added this one to my list. With the introduction of the TV show inspired by the movie and book, it is a perfect time to watch or re-watch this film. Like with Pet Sematary, I wouldn't watch this one if you are sensitive, as it is heartbreaking and disturbing. If you're looking for amazing horror makeup and a truly terrifying story, this is a classic you have to watch.

9. The Insidious Series
From the first Insidious movie, this series has become a favorite of mine. This isn't your typical haunted house story; truly scary, unpredictable, and beautifully stylized.

10. The Shallows
I never thought a shark movie would make the list, but alas, there's a first time for everything, right? In all seriousness, if you haven't already watched this one I highly recommend you do. Normally I don't find shark movies very scary, but this one was actually pretty intense and had me on the edge of my seat.

How to Collage with Inkscape

Greetings! Today I wanted to share a method I use for creating artwork...one that is quick, easy, and somewhat addicting. Creating collage using a digital program may seem daunting, but it's actually a really easy way to make art, especially if you're not as gifted in the whole technical aspect. For today I am using Inkscape, which at this time is a free program that can be downloaded (you can get it from their official website: https://inkscape.org/en/download/). Keep in mind the techniques I'm using today are somewhat advanced and although I will try to walk through it as simply as possible, you may also consider experimenting and becoming more familiar with Inkscape if you are a first time user before attempting this tutorial. Thoughts on Week of the Young Child 2017

Next week starting April 24th is Week of the Young Child 2017 (WOTYC), which celebrates young children, parents, and educators. In preparation for this time, I have been thinking about how I want to share this event with you. The most obvious idea seemed to be sharing activity ideas based on the curriculum themes for each day. As I sat down to write up activity plans, I kept thinking there was something bigger I wanted to say. Taking things back a step, I focused on the event itself. Why do we have Week of the Young Child, when the suggested themes and ideas should be celebrated all year long? The most important reason is awareness...children are important! With a special time of year for everything, from puppies to ice cream sundaes, it can be difficult to take these celebrations seriously. But some are more important than others.
